E-paper monitors: a new technology in the Digital Signage world

E-paper monitors: a new technology in the Digital Signage world
E-ink technology, widely used in the e-reader sector, is also gaining a foothold in the Digital Signage sector. In fact, if initially only small specialised brands produced a limited run of these products, today even the more emblazoned brands such as Philips and Samsung have started to produce their own line of e-paper monitors. But why has this type of monitor been so successful? Continue reading the guide to learn more.

E-paper monitors: the benefits

High readability

An e-paper monitor uses electronic ink technology (e-ink) to display static or periodically updated images. Unlike LCD or OLED screens, does not emit its own light but reflects ambient light, guaranteeing a paper-like reading experience. This means that, just like a sheet of paper, the display and its contents will be readable in all light conditions, even in strong natural lighting such as in shop windows and outdoor spaces.

Low consumption

This type of display does not need power continuously but only for updating content. This not only makes them ideal for battery installations and off-grid solutions, but also contributes to a huge reduction in energy consumption. In addition, this feature ensures that they are not affected by short circuits, power failures and power surges, guaranteeing a longer product life, making them a more sustainable product than conventional monitors.

Compact design

As they do not require a continuous power source, these monitors are characterised by their slim and lightweight design. This makes them suitable for any type of installation: ceiling, wall or display case. In particular, they are well suited for installations on mobile stands.

When not to choose an e-paper monitor?

The e-paper monitor is not a suitable monitor for your business if:
  • You need a screen that supports a wide colour gamut. E-ink screens are often black and white or with a limited colour gamut.
  • You want to transmit moving content. These monitors have a slow refresh rate that makes them perfect for text and images, not video.
  • If you are looking for a low-budget solution, e-paper displays still have a relatively high initial cost. A cost that is offset by the long life and energy savings that this type of technology guarantees.

Types of e-Paper monitors

The world of e-paper displays is constantly evolving and, to date, there are several technologies that meet specific needs. Depending on their characteristics, these displays can be used in different contexts, from digital signage to corporate communication.

Monochromatics

They are the most widespread and represent the most mature technology. They display content exclusively in black and white (or greyscale), ensuring excellent readability in all lighting conditions, even in direct sunlight. Due to their very low power consumption, they are ideal for information signage, digital signage and electronic notice boards.

Coloured (E-Ink Kaleido, Spectra)

This type of monitor gives the possibility of displaying content in colour. However, as mentioned above, they offer a limited colour gamut. These displays are ideal for corporate applications, such as product promotion or the display of visual information that needs more impact than black and white.

Touch

Some models have also been created that include touchscreens for applications such as digital menus or tourist information. Their main characteristic is their ability to combine the energy efficiency of e-paper technology with the interactivity of traditional displays.
